Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s recent move to Portugal has not made a strong impression on local residents. Residents are used to seeing “richer and more famous people” buying property in the area. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s presence has not caused much excitement.
A local real estate agent with decades of experience in Portugal’s Alentejo has revealed that Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan may have spent more than 4 million euros (approximately 365 million yen) on a property in one of the region’s luxury resorts. He said it was expensive.
He said many American A-listers have bought homes in the area in recent years. There were rumors that the royal couple were the latest buyers, but it remains unclear whether they bought an existing home or were planning to build a new one.
A representative told the Mail that local residents were unlikely to be overly impressed. He said the Sussexes’ arrival would have little impact as more wealthy and famous people were buying property in the area in the past.
“There’s no question that we have much richer, much more famous people buying here. I think their influence is zero, to be honest. People like Jeff Bezos are buying here. If you buy in, yes, there may be some repercussions, but that’s not the case with Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan,” the agent told the publication.

Business owners say the differences between the wealthy residents of the gated estates and the locals are stark. In the nearby village of Merides, locals often gather in the town square or in small family-run cafes to play cards and enjoy drinks.
A seafood restaurant owner found the idea of the British royal family moving to the area amusing. But wealthy resort residents don’t mix with locals, owners say. Local businessmen say prestigious people are drawn to the area primarily because of the privacy it offers.
